The American Gold Buffalo was created to rival other 24-karat gold bullion coins from global sovereign mints. While the American Gold Eagle, the official US gold bullion coin, is widely popular, it’s made of 22-karat gold. The Gold Buffalo, with its higher purity, offers a competitive alternative.
James Earle Fraser’s 1913 Indian Head Nickel design graces both the obverse and reverse of the Gold Buffalo. Fraser, born in Winona, Minnesota, and raised on the American frontier in the late 19th century, infused his vision of the American West into this design. The obverse showcases a left-profile portrait of a Native American chieftain, crafted by blending the facial features of three real tribal leaders, alongside engravings of “Liberty” and the year of issue.
The reverse features Black Diamond, a bison from New York City’s Central Park Zoo in the early 1900s. This majestic animal takes center stage, surrounded by inscriptions of “United States of America,” “E Pluribus Unum,” “In God We Trust,” and the coin’s weight, purity, metal content, and face value.
